Applications Now Being Accepted for East Haven Affordable Apartments

by FANS Admin
June 21st, 2020

Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO), a local nonprofit that’s developing the 95-unit East Haven affordable apartment complex in Swannanoa, reports that construction is almost 70% complete, and residents may be moving in as early as September. Applications are now being accepted for 1, 2 and 3-bedroom units. Rents will range from approximately $260 – $700 per month, depending on income and the size of the unit. East Haven is open to residents whose annual household incomes are at, or below, 60% of the county’s median income.

Interest in East Haven has been high, but spaces are still available, and residents are encouraged to apply. For more information, or to request an application, please visit easthavenapartments.com, or call 828-237-3055.

Mountain Housing Opportunities was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the Black Mountain – Swannanoa Valley Endowment Fund, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of WNC. The grant money will be leveraged with other funding to help build sidewalks and pedestrian improvements that will benefit East Haven residents, as well as the community as a whole. And with the help of an additional grant from TD Bank, MHO was able to add rooftop solar panels to East Haven’s center building (see photo below), which has a perfect south-facing roof for harnessing sun power.

East Haven is located at 2244 U.S. 70, near the intersection with Riverwood Road.

Delays Expected in Application Process for East Haven Affordable Apartments

by FANS Admin
April 17th, 2020

At this time, construction is continuing on schedule at East Haven, the new affordable apartment complex being built near the corner of U.S. 70 and Riverwood Road in Swannanoa. But representatives from Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO), the local nonprofit managing the project, anticipate that there will likely be coronavirus-related delays at some point. MHO will be following all federal, state, and local guidelines for construction and other safety issues related to the crisis. The project was originally slated for completion in late summer or fall of this year.

Although MHO had hoped to start taking applications for apartments in April, that date has been pushed back to May at the earliest, but more likely, June. In the meantime, anyone who thinks they might be interested in applying can call Mountain Housing Opportunities, 828-254-4030, to have their name placed on the East Haven list. This list will determine the order in which applications are reviewed, so getting your name on the list is important.
