New Improvements at Swannanoa Library Park and Playground

by FANS Admin
December 21st, 2020
Basketball in Grovemont Park

Above, a group of boys enjoy a game of pickup basketball in Grovemont Park. The new basketball goal was installed by volunteers earlier this summer. It’s part of a Grovemont Park enhancement project funded by the Swannanoa Community Council, Friends of the Swannanoa Library, and a grant from Buncombe County Recreation Services. The project also includes installation of new benches and picnic tables.

The Grovemont Park and playground that surrounds the Swannanoa Library is full of activity these days, with lots of new improvements for the community to enjoy. The multi-phased, $8,000+ project was completed by volunteers this summer and fall, in a series of community workdays coordinated by Swannanoa resident, Bill Bauman.

The new basketball goal, installed during the project’s first phase, was an instant hit, drawing crowds of kids to the playground. Later projects included installation of four new benches, and two ADA-compliant picnic tables. The final phase of work involved parking improvements (signage, timbers, gravel and grading) that added spaces for 15 – 18 cars in the wooded park area alongside the library. These improvements will alleviate the parking shortage at the library and playground, and will be especially helpful during larger community events, like the Groovin’ on Grovemont summer concert series.
The park improvement project was funded by a $6,000 grant from Buncombe County Recreation Services. Additionally, over $2,000 was contributed by the Swannanoa Community Council (which owns the park and library building) and the Friends of the Swannanoa Libary.
Many thanks to Bill Bauman and the many volunteers who brought this project to fruition. Be sure to stop by soon to check it out! The Swannanoa Library is located at 101 West Charleston Avenue, in Grovemont.

Spread the Love this Holiday Season With a Letter, Card or Drawing

by FANS Admin
December 20th, 2020
This has been a difficult year for everyone, but especially for those who are isolated, elderly, or are experiencing health and other challenges. You can make a difference in a stranger’s life, by simply reaching out. It only takes a few minutes of your time – just write a letter, make a card or draw a picture, and bring your offerings to the Swannanoa Library (or any other Buncombe County library branch), or drop them in the book drop. The library will collect and disperse them to community partners, who will pass them along to folks who might need a little extra cheer.
This opportunity is brought to you by Buncombe County Public Libraries, with the support of Meals on Wheels, Mountain Area Residential Facility, Buncombe County Community Engagement Team, Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department, Council on Aging, Charles George VA Hospital, and people like you! This is a great family activity; all ages are welcome to participate. By spreading hope and happiness, we can all help to make the holidays a little brighter for our neighbors.
#spread the love

Swannanoa Library Reopens With ”Grab and Go” Service

by FANS Admin
December 9th, 2020
Swannanoa Library
After months of being closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Swannanoa Library opened its doors on October 13 for “Grab and Go” service. Library hours are 2 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, 1 – 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday (closed Sunday and Monday). Under the Governor’s Phase 3 order, the number of people allowed in the library at one time is limited. Patrons are encouraged to come in, find what they need, and “grab and go,” so that more folks can be served. Hour-long computer sessions will also be available at the library’s two computer stations. Unfortunately, in-person library programs, including storytime, will not be offered at this time. Late fees will resume on Oct. 27.
When visiting the Swannanoa Library, be on the lookout for new “Seek & Find” activities that will be posted in the library window. Search outside the library and see how many of the posted objects you can find. The theme for October is “Pumpkins!”
In accordance with the Governor’s mandate, all adults (and children over 5) are required to wear a mask while inside the library building. Masks will be available for those who don’t have one.
If you’re not comfortable visiting the library in person, you can call the Ask-A-Librarian line at 828-250-4700 for assistance with available services. You can also visit the Buncombe County digital library for access to a wide selection of e-books, audio books and movies.

Swannanoa Library Update

by FANS Admin
August 14th, 2020

The Swannanoa Library is now open on a limited basis for folks who want to use the computers or copier. Hours are Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Please call ahead, 828-250-6486 or 828-250-4700, to schedule an appointment for a 45-minute slot. Copies are 25 cents per side. You can bring one guest/helper along with you to your appointment. Please note that this is for computer and copier use only; you will not be able to browse, check out books or pick up holds.

Although the library building is closed except for computer and copier use, kids can still come by and search for the magical creatures that are hiding all around the outside of the building. The Seek and Find adventure starts at the library’s front door, where a picture of each of the seven creatures is posted. See how many you can find! The fanciful unicorn pictured above was created by Swannanoa Library page (and artistic genius!), Drew Mudry.

Finally, the Swannanoa Library is seeking your input on what you love about our branch, and what you’d like to see improved. This is part of a larger system-wide study to help inform decision-making about Buncombe County’s library resources. You can share your thoughts by sending an email to swannanoa.library@buncombecounty.org, or by posting a comment on the Swannanoa Library Facebook page.
