The Front Porch Theatre at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts proudly presents As It Is In Heaven, by Arlene Hutton, the third production of its sixth season.
The play is set in the 1830’s Shaker society of Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, a community that functions in very ordered ways. The arrival of young Fanny, however, upsets the harmony. Fanny sees angels in the meadow, completely upending and upsetting the community. The leaders question Fanny’s intentions and honesty, and Eldress Hannah is jealous that she, the most devout of Shakers, has not been privileged to see the visions. Is this a resurgence of the original Shaker celebration, or something manufactured by Fanny?
Hymns sung a cappella punctuate the play, which ends with an explosion of Shaker singing and ecstatic dance.
As It Is In Heaven runs from May 10 – 26, with evening performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and matinees on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Matinees will include a post-show talkback/Q&A with actors, artists involved with the production, and/or the director.
Tickets ($20) can be purchased online at www.blackmountainarts.org/theatre. The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is located at 225 West State Street. For info, call 828-669-0930.
