FANS Thanks the Community for Another Great Year!

Swannanoa Sweep 2014

Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS) is grateful for all the community support we received this past year as we pursued our mission of “working for a strong and vibrant Swannanoa by encouraging active involvement, fostering community spirit, and honoring our unique history and natural heritage.” From the individuals, organizations and businesses that supported our fundraising efforts, to the many volunteers who participated in FANS‘ projects and special events, we’re fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful community.

Here are some of the activities FANS was involved in this past year:

  • Sponsored two community gardens, including a new “garden that gives” on Clover Lane (750 pounds of produce were donated to area food banks and other organizations that help the needy in our community);
  • Partnered with Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity to raise money and recruit volunteers to build the “Sweet Home Swannanoa” house in the new Habitat community in Beacon Village;
  • Hosted two huge Community Yard Sales in the Ingles parking lot that brought residents together to buy and sell treasures, swap stories, and connect with old and new friends;
  • Organized the annual Swannanoa Sweep community cleanup;
  • Published the FANS community e-newsletter with local news, Swannanoa history and more;
  • Worked with other organizations and local government to provide advocacy, support and leadership in connection with various community issues, including public safety, greenways, and revitalization.

With financial support from Buncombe County and the Black Mountain-Swannanoa Valley Endowment Fund, FANS volunteers will be working this coming year on bringing much-needed bus shelters to our community. Other new projects include launching a print edition of this community e-newsletter and expanding the Clover Lane community garden. comm_garden_sign

As you think about possible end-of-year donations, please consider putting FANS on your list. FANS is an all-volunteer organization, with no employees, no offices and no overhead, so 100% of your donation will be put to work right here in Swannanoa! Checks can be made payable to FANS and mailed to PO Box 697, Swannanoa, NC 28778. FANS is a 501(c)(3) organization; your donation is tax deductible.

Thank you for your support, and best wishes for a happy and healthy new year!
