Kelsey Oliver, a 2011 graduate of Owen High School, served as a junior Board member of SPCC (now FANS) this past year. During her Board tenure, Kelsey devoted countless hours towards researching and developing a proposal for building bus shelters in Swannanoa. She navigated a maze of regulations, surveyed local bus riders, interviewed public officials, and worked closely with DOT, Asheville Transit and others to prepare a final set of plans and recommendations. In recognition of her hard work and the value of her project to the Swannanoa community, Kelsey has received the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. Congratulations Kelsey on achieving this much-deserved honor! You’ve been a tremendous asset to our Board; your energy and enthusiasm will be greatly missed.
Kelsey is off to college, but her efforts have laid the groundwork for construction of one or more shelters to serve bus riders in our community. FANS has already received a $1,000 donation to help pay for shelters. If you’d like to contribute towards the bus shelter fund, please mail your tax deductible contribution to FANS, PO Box 697, Swannanoa, NC 28778, and note in the memo line that your donation is for bus shelters. We’re currently forming a committee to help identify possible locations for a bus shelter, secure rights-of-way, and hopefully begin construction. If you’d like to help with any aspect of this project, please click here to let us know of your interest.
