The Black Mountain News recently reported that a nonprofit corporation has been formed to care for historic Piney Grove Cemetery, which surrounds the recently-closed First Presbyterian Church of Swannanoa. There’s been a church at that site since the early 1800s, and the cemetery contains some of the oldest grave markers in the county.
First Presbyterian Church of Swannanoa closed last October due to dwindling attendance, and the building is currently for sale. Incorporation of the cemetery, along with private donations for upkeep, will help insure that the grounds are well-maintained. According to the Black Mountain News article, future plans may also include formation of a “Friends of Piney Grove Cemetery” group.
Piney Grove Cemetery is located at 372 Bee Tree Road. To read the Black Mountain News article, click here.
