Asheville Christian Academy (ACA), a K-12 private school, is moving forward with a multi-phase master plan for improvements to the school’s 60+-acre Swannanoa campus.
The first phase of the project, which is expected to be completed within a year, includes construction of a 6,000 square foot strength and conditioning facility to support ACA’s growing athletic and physical education programs. (The school recently added a football field.) An indoor golf practice facility will also be built for the men’s and women’s golf teams.
Additional Phase I plans call for constructing a new maintenance building on the west side of the campus, which will allow the school’s maintenance facilities to be moved from their current location on the second floor of the elementary school building. The vacated second floor space will become additional classroom and music facilities for elementary school students.
Future phases of the project may include an indoor pool, fine arts center, child care building, track and field facilities, practice gym, tennis courts, and an agricultural center. No timeline has been established for completion of these additional projects.
ACA’s Head of School, Bill George, says that good stewardship of the land is one of ACA’s priorities. The school is maintaining large areas of green space on the campus, and hopes to preserve agricultural uses on parts of the property. Future development will be done with close attention to stormwater runoff and erosion issues, and to preservation and enhancement of the Swannanoa River, which borders the campus.
ACA currently makes some of its facilities available to the community when not in use by students (including the school’s beautiful cross country trail), and hopes to continue this practice as new facilities are added. George says that being a good neighbor to the community is also very important to ACA. Efforts will be made to share campus facilities with the public where possible, while balancing the need for school safety and stewardship of the land.
