Every Saturday since May, Food Connection, a local nonprofit, has partnered with other organizations to provide free meals to Swannanoa Valley residents. Although funding was in danger of running out at times, new partners continued to step up to keep the program going. Thanks to a generous grant from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, the meal giveaway will now continue through the month of December.
All those in need of a nutritious free meal are invited to stop by the meal pickup location in the parking lot at 105 Whitson Avenue (between Beacon Veterinary and Educational Partners), on Saturdays, from 11 a.m. – noon. Just drive up and a volunteer will bring your meals to your car in heat-and-serve “to go” containers. Each meal is lovingly prepared by the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly.
Previous partners in the meal giveaway included the Swannanoa Community Council (SCC) and Friends of the Swannanoa Library (FOTSL), which co-sponsored meals for two Saturdays in September. Hundreds of residents received delicious meals prepared by chef Allen Dye (also a Swannanoa Community Council board member), and were treated to some great live music from The Paper Crowns and Ashley Heath. The SCC and FOTSL-sponsored meal giveaway was a gift to the community by the same organizations that normally sponsor the Groovin’ on Grovemont summer concert series, which unfortunately had to be canceled this year due to the coronavirus.
