Hearts with Hands, a nonprofit disaster relief organization based in Asheville, has launched a $5 million capital campaign to fund the purchase of a 200,000-square foot warehouse in Swannanoa. The warehouse, located at 850 Warren Wilson Road (across from Owen Park and National Wiper Alliance), was once home to the Anvil T-shirt manufacturing plant. It was vacant for more than 10 years before Hearts with Hands began using the building last March under a lease agreement. That arrangement has worked out so well that Hearts with Hands now hopes to raise enough money to purchase the facility for use as the organization’s permanent home.
In addition to offices, the facility offers ample warehouse space for gathering disaster relief supplies and preparing them for shipment to locations throughout the United States. The warehouse capacity proved particularly valuable this past year as Hearts with Hands worked to provide relief to victims of the devastating hurricanes that struck Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.
Hearts with Hands is seeking to attract 1,000 community partners willing to commit to a $1,000 donation per year for 5 years. This level of support will enable the organization to purchase the facility and also make necessary improvements, such as installing a new roof.
