Did you know that Swannanoa is home to one of the oldest cemeteries in Buncombe County? The historic Piney Grove Cemetery sits on the sloping hillsides that surround the former First Presbyterian Church of Swannanoa, located at 372 Bee Tree Road. The cemetery dates to the early 1800s and has more than 1,700 gravesites. It’s the final resting place for members of many of the Valley’s founding families, along with veterans of four wars, including the Revolutionary War.
Piney Grove is managed by a nonprofit board that has recently launched a new website for the cemetery at www.pineygrovewnc.org. If you’d like to visit the cemetery, it’s open to the public and is surrounded by a walking path.
