Mission Health is seeking approval to build a 130,000 square foot medical facility on an 8+ acre tract of land at the corner of U.S. Highway 70 and Warren Wilson Road in Swannanoa. The Buncombe County Board of Adjustment approved a conditional use permit for the project in January. Additional building permits will be required before the project can proceed. If approved, construction is expected to begin in March 2019 and be completed in September 2020.
According to the plans submitted to the county, the Mission facility will have approximately 60 employees (including 10 doctors), a 158-space parking lot, and sidewalks to accommodate pedestrian traffic. The facility will be accessed via U.S. 70 and Warren Wilson Road.
Mission has not released any details on how the facility will be used and what services will be offered. However, in a January article in the Mountain Xpress, Derek Allen, an Asheville attorney who presented the conditional use permit application to the Board of Adjustment on behalf of Mission, was quoted as saying that “health care providers are getting away from the big behemoth hospitals and going out into the community so you have less travel time for the folks that you’re going to be serving.”
