There really is such a thing as a free lunch, and it happens every week at the Swannanoa Welcome Table, located in the basement of the Swannanoa United Methodist Church, 216 Whitson Avenue. On Wednesdays, from 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., volunteers prepare and serve a nutritious meal to approximately 100 residents, many of them elderly or disabled. As the name “Welcome Table” implies, all are welcome to share in this free meal with their neighbors.
The Welcome Table was started in 2003 by a group of residents who were looking for a way to serve the community in the wake of the devastating fire that destroyed the Beacon Mill in September of that year. Since that time, the Welcome Table has become a Swannanoa institution, as well as an important source of food and weekly fellowship for many residents of our community. In 2010, the Welcome Table incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization, and is now managed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors.
The Welcome Table has been lucky to have a core group of dedicated volunteers throughout its 16-year existence, but many of them are getting older now themselves, and others have moved on. It’s time to re-build the organization and reinforce the volunteer ranks, to ensure that this important ministry can continue for many more years. This is where you come in. If you have a heart for service, and a little time to spare, the Welcome Table needs you!
The most pressing needs are for (1) volunteers to help prepare and serve the weekly meal; (2) individuals who might be interested in serving as a member of the Welcome Table board; and (3) a volunteer to help establish a better online presence for the Welcome Table. If you think you might be able to help in any of these areas, or would like to learn more, please contact Robert Randolph at 828-712-0756, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
