Warren Wilson College’s commitment to sustainable practices has earned it recognition as a top sustainable college by the Sustainable Campus Index, a publication of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The AASHE’s Sustainable Campus Index recognizes top-performing colleges and universities across the country.
Based on its performance across a number of sustainability metrics, Warren Wilson ranked third place overall among baccalaureate institutions, as well as third place in the area of investment and finance. The College was especially recognized for its civic identity framework, which prioritizes civic responsibility and sustainability as the core ethos for each student.
Sustainability is part of the foundation of Warren Wilson College. It plays a significant role in the classroom, as well as in all of the College’s practices and decision making. For example, in 2015, Warren Wilson became one of approximately 25 colleges and universities nationwide to pledge a total divestiture from fossil fuels. That goal was achieved in 2020. The college also follows a Zero Waste Initiative. Currently, it diverts two thirds of its waste from the landfill, and has plans to divert 90 percent of all waste from the landfill by 2032. Warren Wilson also recently completed a project that restored campus streams to their original meanders and natural courses.
Congratulations Warren Wilson! Swannanoa is fortunate to have this amazing college in our midst.
