StoryCorps

Do you know stories about the Swannanoa Valley that need to be preserved ?
Do you know someone in Swannanoa who is a great talker and likes to share
stories about their life experience?

Then you may want to record your
story through StoryCorps when they come to the Asheville area March 26-May 2.
StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind.  Since
2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have interviewed family and friends
through StoryCorps.

Storycorps will begin to take reservations for
interviews in Buncombe County starting tomorrow MARCH 12th. I’ve pasted
information about StoryCorps below including how to make reservations for
interview slots. If you are interested, don’t delay. Interview times fill up
fast.

Here’s to preserving all the great stories and heritage in
Swannanoa!

About StoryCorps

“StoryCorps is an independent
nonprofit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate one another’s lives
through listening.  Unlike traditional oral history interviews, a
StoryCorps interview is done by two people who know each other. We believe that
being interviewed by a friend or family member is a powerful experience. It not
only captures your memories and stories, but the dynamics of your
relationship.

StoryCorps also provides the equipment, space and staff for
a broadcast-quality recording. A StoryCorps facilitator guides you through the
interview process and operates the recording equipment. At the end of the
session, you receive a CD of the recording to pass along to family and friends.
With your permission, another copy will be archived at the American Folklife
Center in the Library of Congress, accessible to future
generations.

Selected interviews are edited and produced for broadcast on
our website, NPR, and other media outlets.

MAKE A RESERVATION
You can reserve a space when the
interviews open on March 12.  More reservations will become available on
March 27.  StoryCorps partners with local organizations and groups to reach
out to the widest range of people in each community, but you don’t have to be
part of an organization to tell your story; any individual can reserve a time to
record his or her story.

On March 12 you can make a reservation on-line
at www.storycorps.net . Go to the “Record Your Story” section on
the website and click on “Asheville” listed below.  There you will find
detailed instructions.

Reservations open at 10:00 AM local time. If you
are experiencing difficulty accessing any of the reservations locations pages to
make a reservation, please call 800-850-4406. Demand for interviews is high, and
if you cannot make a reservation, we suggest that you add your name to the
waiting list.

StoryCorps Steps

Step 1: Make a
reservation.
It’s easy to record an interview with someone important in your
life. First, think of a person whose stories you would like to hear, or someone
who might like to ask about yours, like a grandparent, sibling, or friend. Then
find a location and reserve an appointment for the StoryBooth online or by
phone.

Step 2: Prepare for your session.
Read what to expect and visit
our great questions page.

Step 3: Tell your story, pass it on.
Bring
your friend or loved one to the StoryBooth. Our trained Facilitator will explain
the process, make you feel comfortable, and sit with you during your 40-minute
session. At the end of your session, you’ll receive a free broadcast-quality CD
to pass along to family and friends. A second copy will be archived at the
Library of Congress.

There are many more details on the website,
including a “Frequently Asked Questions” section – www.storycorps.net.
