SWANNANOA COMMUNITY CLEANUP
On Saturday, April 4, Swannanoa residents and business owners will once again join forces for the fifth Swannanoa Sweep, a community-wide roadside and riverside cleanup. Sponsored by SPCC (Swannanoa Pride Community Coalition), the event will take place from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Everyone is invited and encouraged to come out and help usher in Spring with some Spring Cleaning!
Hundreds of volunteers have participated in past Swannanoa Sweeps, including entire families and many local students, collecting thousands of pounds of trash in those familiar orange bags. “It’s always amazing to see how much a hard-working group of volunteers can accomplish in just a few hours”, says event coordinator Maureen Dillow. And there are always “unusual” items that turn up – from a $20 bill to less savory finds. “It’s all part of the fun”, says Dillow.
Volunteers will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Valley Ace Hardware parking lot in Swannanoa, to collect supplies and form teams, before fanning out to roadsides and riverbanks that have been identified as needing extra attention. Gloves, vest and bags are provided. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own drinking water and be prepared for any kind of weather. “We can almost guarantee it will rain!”, laughs Dillow.
