We appreciate your patience as we work hard to reconstruct our new website.  Thank you for your continued support as we strive to bring some exciting changes your way.  There will be many additions and revisions to come over the next few weeks as our organization transitions.  Please check back with us often for updates!

Introducing Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS)!

Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS) has come together to create a coalition of Valley citizens dedicated to strengthening our community through joint efforts with other organizations and engaging in activities that encourage participation and cooperation.
FANS has retained the 501c3 nonprofit status of the former Swannanoa Pride Community Coalition, but changed the organizational structure by expanding its board to 12 members in order to broaden its reach in our various communities and neighborhoods.

New Board officers are: Chair: Sophia Papadopoulos; Vice-Chair: Valerie Taylor; Treasurer: Chris Nemec; Secretary: Shaun Moore. In addition, Board members are: Cindy Davidson, Maureen Dillow, Terry McFee-Dorlan, Carol Groben, Doug Lebbon, Kelsey Oliver, Connie Root and Darcy Wilson.

“One of our main goals is to find ways to bridge differences and bring the community together through events and common goals,” said Board Chair, Sophia Papadopoulos. “We want to build on the efforts that SPCC started and continue with some of the activities that improve our community, like the annual Swannanoa Sweep Community Cleanup, and others. We want to do a better job of listening to what our community wants and needs. To do that, we encourage involvement and feedback from our Valley neighbors.

In the next few weeks, FANS will be redesigning the SPCC website to bring more information to the community about its goals and projects. Meanwhile, FANS invites YOU to become an active participant in enhancing our beautiful Valley community while keeping its proud heritage.>

You don’t have to sit in on committee meetings.
You don’t have to devote many days to activities.
You don’t have to commit to any specific length of time.
You just have to let us know that you’d like to help in some way.

When events come up, we’ll contact you, and you can say, “No, that’s not what I want to do (or can do) right now. Or you can say, “YES! I can help with this.”

Click here now and send us an email, asking to be added to our “Community Responders” list.

Visit our booth at the Mill Around the Village Festival Sept. 17 to learn more about FANS, and enter for prize drawings from Swannanoa businesses. Look for the Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS) banner.

FANS Needs You!

Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS) had a busy and productive year in 2011. We completely re-structured the organization, elected new officers and a new Board, and enthusiastically embarked on a mission to better serve the community and to bring residents together through cooperation and collaboration.

Our annual Swannanoa Sweep community cleanup was a great success this past year, as was the Swannanoa River cleanup and the special recycling event that FANS co-sponsored in the fall. We continue to work on bus shelters, the Swannanoa greenways project, and related pedestrian and bicycle safety issues.  Our Swannanoa Community Garden in the Grovemont neighborhood had a great year, too, with more people participating — by renting plots and/or volunteering — than ever before.  We’re re-designing our website and working to expand the reach of our community e-newsletter.

Our end-of-year projects included hanging the Christmas wreaths along U.S. 70 and hosting the annual Community-Wide Holiday Party. These and other projects have kept our Board and volunteers very busy! We want to extend a special thanks to all those who have helped during this transition year.  Your dedication and hard work are much appreciated.

In 2012, we hope to focus on projects that strengthen our community by giving residents the opportunity to make connections with their neighbors and work together cooperatively. Community members have given us many great ideas for new activities, including an outdoor movie series, Swannanoa history and storytelling events, and a community potluck. But to make these and other ideas a reality, we need your help!  There are two ways you can pitch in:
  • Volunteer — Whether you’ve got a little extra time or a lot, we need your ideas and energy!  To learn more about volunteer opportunities, please call 581-9848 or send us an email.
  • Donate — FANS is an all-volunteer organization supported entirely by donations.  We work hard to use resources wisely and keep expenses to a minimum, but we need your donations to sustain our programs.  We realize that there are many worthy organizations out there, and we’re grateful for whatever contribution you can make, no matter how small.  Donations are tax-deductible and can be  mailed to FANS, PO Box 697, Swannanoa, NC 28778.
