Between December 3 and January 4, thirty-three beautiful Christmas trees will be on display at shops and businesses throughout the Swannanoa Valley. The trees have been creatively decorated by individuals, organizations and businesses in our community, around this year’s theme, “A Star Appeared.” Each tree has a collection box beside it; residents can “vote” for their favorite trees by placing money or a check in the box. This year, 14 of the trees are located at the Monte Vista Hotel (which has sponsored ‘Deck the Trees’ for the past 10 years), 308 West State Street, in Black Mountain. To reduce crowding and make the event more COVID-friendly, the remaining 19 trees are spread around the Swannanoa Valley, at various locations.
All proceeds from ‘Deck the Trees’ benefit the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry Fuel Fund. The cost of electricity, oil, natural gas, propane and wood has risen over the last several years, and many of our neighbors can’t afford to heat their homes during the cold winter months. This is especially true this year, with the added financial hardships caused by the coronavirus pandemic. ‘Deck the Trees’ is a way to give back to the community while enjoying a beautiful holiday display.
