The Groovin’ on Grovemont summer concert series wraps up its 19th season with a final concert on Tuesday evening, August 10, in Grovemont Square, adjacent to the Swannanoa Library (101 West Charleston Avenue). Judging from the enthusiastic crowds that turned out for the first two Groovin’ concerts on July 13 and 27, these family-friendly events were greatly missed during last year’s pandemic summer. Don’t miss out on this year’s final concert — bring a blanket, lawn chair, frisbee, etc. and come join your neighbors for a free evening of great music!
And don’t forget to bring your appetite, too. Concessions will center around the theme of “New Age Barbeque,” with a delicious selection of meats and sides, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. All donations and proceeds from concessions benefit the Friends of the Swannanoa Library and the Swannanoa Community Council, and provide support for the Swannanoa Library and Grovemont Park and Playground.
Groovin’ on Grovemont is made possible through the efforts of volunteers, and the support of 25 business and individual sponsors. Thank you to all those who help make these free events possible for our community!
Here’s the lineup for August 10:
4:00-5:00 pm – Special pre-Groovin’ program: Sam Wheelock – Eclectic Music with Roots + Storytelling
Biographical info: “I am the grandson of a Tennessee moonshiner whose family tree branches to the Carter Family. Singer-Songwriter concerts are like quilts which weave storytelling to create a connection between us. The music? It’s eclectic, roots stuff.”
6:00 pm: The Datrian Johnson Band – Cosmic Appalachian R&B and Soul
Biographical info: This four-member, Asheville, NC-based band offers up a funky blend of Appalachian, Americana & Soul. Duane Simpson on lead guitar, Jake Wolf on bass and Michael Rhodes on the drums lay a solid foundation, atop of which lead singer Datrian Johnson soars. Playing songs from artists like Bill Withers and Stevie Wonder and then jumping to Johnny Cash and the Beatles, there is no telling where this band will take you!
Bonus feature: GIANT USED BOOK SALE from 5 – 8:30 p.m. in the basement of the Swannanoa Library. Come check out the newly-remodeled book sale space. Thousands of great books at unbelievably low prices!
