SWANNANOA
VISITORS CENTER LOOKS FOR NEW HOME
The
Swannanoa Visitors Center, located at 101 Whitson Avenue, has closed
due to the sale of the building by its current owner. But members of
the three groups that collaborated to open the Visitors Center last
spring hope that the closure will be temporary. “We’re
actively looking for space to house the Visitors Center and Swannanoa
Valley Museum exhibits,” said Visitor Center Coordinator Sandra
Abromitis. “The center is a great resource for residents,
visitors and businesses in Swannanoa, and we hope to re-open at a new
location.”
The
Swannanoa Visitors Center is a joint effort of the Swannanoa Pride
Community Coalition, the Black Mountain-Swannanoa Chamber of
Commerce, and the Swannanoa Valley Museum. The center opened last
June in space at 101 Whitson Avenue that was generously donated to
the three groups by the then-lessee of the building, Dean Pistor of
Realty World Marketplace.
Since
its opening, the Visitors Center has hosted numerous community
meetings and events, including the “Taste of Swannanoa”
held in conjunction with the center’s grand opening, and the
recent “Organization Mixer” for nonprofits serving the
Swannanoa Valley. A dedicated team of volunteers, coordinated by the
Swannanoa Pride Community Coalition, staffed the Visitors Center
during the spring, summer and fall. The Black Mountain-Swannanoa
Chamber of Commerce provided display racks for business, civic,
community, and visitor information, and the Swannanoa Valley Museum
provided a photographic display about the history of Swannanoa.
Anyone
who knows of a property or space that might make a suitable new home
for the Swannanoa Visitors Center is encouraged to contact Sandra
Abromitis at 686-8281.
