Thinking about the land

by carolgroben
June 4th, 2009

A public meeting will be held at the Black Mountain Public Library on the
4th of June at 7 pm to discuss the findings of the  “Thinking about the
land: results of a PhotoVoice project in the Swannanoa Valley” that was
conducted last summer by Anne Sourdril.

According to Dr.
Sourdril:

“Thinking about the land: results of a PhotoVoice project in
the Swannanoa valley”, from May 14 through July 26 at the Swannanoa Valley
Museum, the Black Mountain Public Library, and the Swannanoa Publc Library.

Photovoice is a form of social science research in which interviewers
are given cameras, asked to take pictures of things that are significant to
them, and are then asked about the pictures. I have been interviewing Swannanoa
Valley residents for the last year and included a set of photovoice interviews.
Interviewees were asked to include pictures of the landscape, of people using
the land, and of any other features, buildings, or places that they believed are
important to preserving or protecting the landscape, environment and community.
The exhibition presents pictures taken by local residents, their thoughts on the
photos, and an overview of the results.

The exhibition will be held in
the following locations on the following dates:
– from the 14th of May until
the 3rd of June at the Swannanoa Valley Museum,
– from the 4th to the 28th
of June at the Black Mountain Public Library
– from the 1st until the 26th
of July at the Swannanoa Public Library.

In addition, a public meeting
will be held at the Black Mountain Public Library on the 4th of June at 7 pm, at
which time I will be discussing this work and answering questions.

These
events are being sponsored by the Coweeta Long Term Ecological Research Project,
the University of Georgia, the Fulbright Franco-American Commission for
Educational Exchange, the Swannanoa Valley Museum, the Black Mountain Public
Library, and the Swannanoa Public Library. ”
